AND WHY YOU SHOULD
Thanks to Brad Krause for this...
It’s easy to forget about self-care when you’re busy getting fit. But in order to maintain good mental health, you must take care of yourself and take steps to manage stress. From coming up with arelaxation regimen and finding ways to smile to prioritizing sleep and saying “no” to people, here is why self-care is so important — and how to implement it in your daily life.
Looking for Ways to Relax
No matter who you are or what you do, there are times you experience stress. While it may not be possible to eliminate it altogether, you can reduce your stress levels by fitting relaxation into your life. This could mean taking the time to read a book or watch a movie, or taking a hot bath by candlelight. You could listen to soothing music or play a round at the golf course. Meditation and breathing exercises are particularly beneficial for mental health, as they calm your mind and encourage you to be present in the moment. If you want to add a fitness element, try If you want to add a fitness element, try yoga, which is known to strengthen the core and noticeably improve flexibility.
Spending Time with Your Dog
If you have a dog, spending time with them is one of the best things you can do to manage stress and improve your mental health. The love and companionship can go a long way in providing joy and reducing stress and anxiety. Also, having a consistent exercise schedule with your pup brings a ton of physical health benefits to the both of you. Furthermore, your dog needs you. The responsibility to provide your dog with structure has a way of carrying over to other parts of your life, and it reminds you that you’re important.
Finding Your Smile
You may know that when you work out, endorphins are released in the body. These chemicals make us feel good and can even bring about a feeling of euphoria (the “runner’s high”). Endorphins are also released when we smile, along with other “feel-good” neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin and dopamine. Here’s the point: smile more often! Smiling not only benefits our mental health, but it’s also great for our social health. It connects us with others, breaks down barriers, and lightens the mood of everyone involved. So, try intentionally smiling more and see if it doesn’t brighten up your day a bit.
Taking Sleep Seriously
Along with relaxing, spending time with your dog, and smiling, prioritizing sleep will make a world of difference in how you feel every day. Too many people neglect sleep, and it can negatively affect how you make decisions and solve problems, reduce your energy throughout the day, make you irritable, make learning and remembering things more difficult — the list goes on. On the contrary, getting adequate sleep can improve your memory and problem-solving skills, make you more alert and engaged, enhance your mood, and stave off depression. If you’re getting the right quantity of sleep but still feel groggy, it may be your mattress. To ensure adequate sleep quality, pick the right mattress for your sleeping style and replace it when it starts to wear out, typically every seven to 10 years. Memory foam technology has improved significantly over the years; make sure to review your options.
Finally, don’t be afraid to say “no” to people. Overcommitting only adds stress to our lives and sets us up for disappointing ourselves and others. For instance, if you feel like you need a break, gracefully tell your boss that you can’t work overtime this weekend, opt to stay in and spend time with the family, and don’t volunteer for three different organizations next week.
While physical fitness is an important discipline in life, it does little good if we’re neglecting our mental health and letting the stress pile up. Look for ways to fit relaxation into your life, whatever that looks like for you. Spend quality time with your dog, and create more moments for smiling. Make sleep a priority, and say no when you need to. Don’t forget about self-care when you’re making strides toward your personal goals.
The more unnatural we get, it may well be that the unhappier we get as well... Carolyn is retired and who loves the nomadic life! She found she can have a much better quality of life by living in a van and also travel at the same time! She graciously shares with us the details of how she makes it work and how satisfying it can be!
She's shocked how much ease she has, how calm & at peace...
Dramatic transformation thru the breath!!
A man wrote: "For many many years I suffered with debilitating anxiety and depression. I had tried so many things (medications, talking therapies, books, alternative therapies etc) and nothing would shake it. About 3 years ago I started focusing on my breath for just 10 minutes a day, and over time my whole nervous system started to calm. Although it took me a bit of time to really settle into doing this daily, I found that within a few months of doing this practice everyday, my anxiety and depression had gone.
For anyone who's cynical about this technique ... it has... transformed my life. "
Advice for Beginners-- "If you are a beginner, I really recommend using a guided meditation app to help you get started (I use 'Calm'). I also want to highlight the importance of not trying to do this practice perfectly, just let it be what it is. As long as you keep doing it, the easier it will become. I invest just 10 minutes a day, everyday, first thing in the morning and it's the best investment I have ever made!!!! The changes will be gradual at first, but give it time and patience and you will open up a whole new way of being . . ." - (From comments on the video)
Do you know that the brain is a master of illusion?
Take the faculty of vision, for example. What we see with our physical eye is actually backwards & upside down as well as being inaccurate in about 25 other ways. The brain has to “edit” or turn it around and fill in bits so that we can function on the world. Like the blind spot on the retina that we “fill in” with made –up stuff that is conjectured from the other parts of the picture that we can see. We “fool ourselves” in other ways, like in experiencing events as simultaneous that our brain is registers as juxtaposed—the time lag in way nerves register things. It’s amazing the things the brain has to coordinate to keep us functioning; about 200 or 2000 factors working in concert just for ONE simple connection.
Memory is very selective— what is remembered depends on how a question is asked. Current experiences are generally over-rated, while those from the past are under-rated. As for events of high emotional impact, it is remembered that they happened, but not the details. The intensity of both good & bad memories fades with time.
This is amazing— not so different than you may have already suspected—that we highly suggestible beings. People’s memories are found to be very inaccurate, and how accurate a person thinks their memory is tells you nothing about how accurate their memories actually are!
Don’t be shocked-- though thousands were-- on social media earlier this month. This “dead whale” is made of plastic debris found in the ocean, made to increase awareness on ocean pollution in response, in part, to the 30 beached whales found on seashores last year.
Protest, I know-- or at least truth- telling-- has a place and is needed (perhaps) to help heal the world’s injustice, but more heartening to me are the positive and creative reactions such as these. Even my own local Surfrider is involved in reusing and recycling the nasty waste into art, cleaning up debris and creating statements of heart & beauty from the rubble...
"YOU CAN KILL ME IF YOU LIKE.. but you cannot stop the emancipation of women!" That's what Tahirih said after she threw off her veil in 1848 Persia.
Here's more of that inspiring story.
In the end, they did put an end to this strong, amazing woman whose legacy continues. She lived at the convergence of two powerful faith teachings. So many wonders brought to earth started with amazing Masters such as she and the Ones who inspired her. She was battered, but it didn't stop her truth from flowing. For those who may reject the source of this great transformation, begun then and now continuing, I have no objection to that--it is the privilege of freedom!!
Community & Unity built on spiritual foundations
What other way is there to save this ailing world ?
Its a vision of "an alternative society which is not based on greed and competition, but rather on cooperation and service to community members... spreading to a world-wide community mainly by actions of inspired youth." *
The full version is here---
Now if that is not inspiring, what could be ?!!
Its true that this is begun by a somewhat "organized religion", which is a bone to pick for many, This faith has been one that's so purposeful, unusual &inspired as to throw its resources to empower all humanity. There's no other group so highly motivated to let go of nature's strong attachments to its own, to its ownership of sources or promotion of its name. And that is truly happening! Surely the name and source are vital, but they are not the center-- Simply, if this world is to beunified and healed, then someone's got to start it, and pour into it their all !
I FOUND MYSELF thinking--
Just how great it is to be a part of the most healing, cutting edge, amazing movement ever on the earth!!! :))
I believe this is one small representative of that much bigger picture, opening a door to something hugely bigger ... Clearly its not be be- all, end- all-search for everyone, but truly, I (and most of us in this) believe it's the starting point of the biggest, healthiest transformation ever to captivate & motivate the people of the world. For those who would investigate it, there is much support for that. For those who don't, well only time will tell.

To be Happy is in your mind & can also take some doing, such as learning to accept what the Universe delivers, and to correct you thoughts and feelings so as to flow with that, to be in synchronicity with the Wiser or Higher mind.
I love walking & do alot of it.
Its one of the most natural exercises you can do.
Very relaxing too, a way to gather and correct your thoughts!
